Spa Society in Declines and Revives Again

1901 – The Fairfax Hotel burned down and sparked a fire at DeFord’s Tannery. Both were comletely gutted.

1902 — The Highlawn Inn, noted for its architecture, was built for Senator Algernon Unger.

1902 — The Opera House was built and began showing movies in 1909.

1903 — The newly built Washington and Dunn Hotels provided hundreds of rooms for visitors.

1903 — Berkeley Springs Bottling Works began commerical distribution of the spring water.

1913 — Georgia McIntire Weaver took the West Virginia State Bar Exam and was the first woman to pass it. She was a suffragist who worked effortlessly to pass suffrage in the State of West Virginia.

1914 – 1918 — World War I impacted the town and its tourism. The residents were fiercely patriotic and sponsored many activities to support the war effort.
