Building Boom in Bath

1784 — Steamboat inventor, James Rumsey demonstrated a mechanical boat model for George Washington. Rumsey agreed to build Washington a home on the two lots he bought overlooking the springs.

1784 — The first bath buildings were opened replacing the rustic rocks around the springs.

1793 — Noted physician, Dr. Benjamin Ruh recommended the medicinal use of the baths at Berkeley Springs.

1793 — Bath is noted as a fashionable resort that all must visit.

1794 — President George Washington and Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton stopped at the local inn for a night on their way to western Pennsylvania to subdue the Whiskey Rebellion.
