1776 — Methodist Bishop Francis Asbury made the first of many visits to what he refers to as “Bath, that seat of sin.” 1776 — December 6 — The Virginia Legislature passed a bill establishing the town, “Bath”, on 50 acres around the springs. Four acres immediately surrounding the springs were reserved as the public Bath Square. 1777 — The first lots were sold in Bath. Buyers included George Washington, who bought two lots, and his brother Samuel. Other notable buyers included General Horatio Gates, a Revolutionary hero. Also, noteworthy were James Smith and Charles Carroll, signers of the Declaration of Indendence, James Mercer, a member of the Continental Congress, and Daniel St. Thomas Jennifer, a signer of the US Constitution. 1779 – 1781 — Hessian officers were kept as VIP prisoners of war at the springs.
