Spa Life Interrupted by the French
and Indian War

1750George Washington visits the baths at Berkeley Springs, so his brother, Lawrence, can take the waters for his health. 

1750 – 1754 — Tourism was booming due to the growing fame of the spa. Hundreds of people came yearly to experience the medicinal properties of the water. Due to this, a thriving comunity had formed in the town.

1754 – 1763 — During the French and Indian War, George Washington chased Native Americans from the town and region. Tourism halted during this period due to the war.

1763 – Britain prevailed in the French and Indian War. The French lost lands, and the Native Americans disersed from the region for many reasons including disease, relocation, and retreat.
