1820 — Morgan County was created from parts of Berkeley and Hampshire Counties with its seat at Bath, Berkeley Springs. The county court initally convened in a tavern until a stone house was bought to serve as the first courthouse. This house was the Sherrard residence at the corner of Wilkes and Fairfax Street. It is currently the Antique Mall.
1820 – The County was named in honor of General Daniel Morgan, a prominent Revolutionary War figure. He proved himself as a brilliant military strategist during the war.
1828 – The Paw Paw Tunnel began construction in 1928 as part of the C&O Canal.
1830– Martin Van Buren, the future president, visited the town.
