1928 — A converted car storage garage, the Berkeley Theatre began showing movies. It is the current Star Theatre. 1929 — The park acquired more land. The current main bathhouse was built. 1931 — The bandstand was erected in the park where it still stands today. 1933 — The Park View Inn was built on the site of the former Berkeley Springs Hotel. Today, it is the popular Country Inn. 1934 — The Cacapon State Park was constructed on the outskirts of the county. It was a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) project during the Great Depression to provide jobs and training to America’s unemployed men. 1934 — President Franklin D. Roosevelt visited the springs and The Pines, a polio rehabilitation center in the old War Memorial Hospital. 1937 — Tomato farms and canneries were flourishing in the county. The Tomato Festival originated. Due to World War II, it only lasted five seasons. 1950 — 1951 — The Victorian Bath House was demolished and replaced with the current outdoor swimming pool — the first outdoor pool in West Virginia. 1952 — The Berkeley Springs Chamber of Commerce was founded. 1954 — The Berkeley Springs Castle opened for tourists. It remaned open for tourism until 1999. 1965 — Coolfont Resort was built, a popular resort destination for Washington’s political and social elite. |
