1760 – 1765 ~ Colonial Society Comes to Take the Waters

Hundreds regularly visit well-known medical springs on frontier during summer season. By 1770s, new roads make spa more popular. Pleasure and health seekers “take the waters.”

1761 — George Washington visits for his own health.

1767 — George Washington visits with Martha and Patsy; Lord Fairfax also at springs.

1769 — George Washington visits for a month with Martha and Patsy; Lord Fairfax also at the springs.

1772 — Young James Madison comes for his health.

Spring and settlement around them are part of newly formed Berkeley County. Name Berkeley Springs originates.
