1776 — Methodist Bishop Francis Asbury makes first of many visits to “Bath, that seat of sin.” December 6 — Virginia Legislature passes bill establishing a town, “Bath”, on 50 acres around the springs. Four acres immediately surrounding the springs set off as public Bath Square. 1777 — First lots sold in Bath. Buyers include George Washington and other Revolutionary War era notables. 1779-81 — Hessian officers kept as VIP prisoners of war at the springs. |
